Rabies Vaccine Annually?????

Just went to a super vet - graduated top of class a while back. She insists annual vaccine is a must. A new case of rabid raccoon chased by dogs and caught - one dog current on rabies so nothing needed, other dog not current must spend six months (that's right - months) in vet clinic for observation. I am so ticked, but she feels it is for the protection of the dog and rabies is currently bad (5 cases in Baldwin County, I believe currently). She feels it is the stuff the vaccine is mixed with that causes problems. TJ was last vaccinated with a 3 yr vaccine this past May so in order to go to the dog park for Memorial Day weekend get together I am forced to vaccinate him. Would love to hear other opinions. She does not think the new attempt for a three year will pass. Anyone up to date on this. Thanks ps: if we were not going to be with other dogs I would hold off until the legislation passes or fails and I may opt to do just that.

  1. As a licensed vet tech, I agree that vaccination should be evaluated per area. I live in WA state and we have a 3 year vaccine prtotcol for rabies and distemper-parvo-corona. I vaccinate my dogs that show regularly yearly until 3 with the distemper-parvo-corona, then I feel that they have enough immunity to deal with everything. I don't vaccinate for kennel cough, lepto, giardia or any of the the 3 million other things you can vaccinate for. They even have a vaccine for dental disease for pete's sake. If rabies is a problem, you should vaccinate annually. A vaccine causes a lot less problem than quarantine or mandatory euthanasia. Vaccines now are much safer than they used to be, as long as they are not done in excess, as is vaccinating for everything under the sun.

  2. Thanks for your insight. I am an RN and think the multiple vaccines reduce the natural immune response - like negative feedback mechanisms in humans - but I don't know how this works in dogs. Seems odd only one state has this requirement to my knowledge. I think I'll do it this year and hope for a change in the rule. Thanks again
