No, this is not something silly.... clean hair soaks up oil and there is a group who collects hair - human and animal -stuffs it into nylon nets and packs it off to groups for oil spillage.

Matter of Trust collects boxes of hair, nylons, etc for groups all over. Here's a video ( really cool music, too!) They then recycle the oil in various ways.

The Sunshine State Rhodesian Ridgeback Club just announced their Spring event- Fun Day will be held in March. I took Roadie and Logan to the event last fall. Everyone had a blast. This is a great way to meet others in the Ridgeback community!

Trip to the "Dog" Park

We don't have a real dog park so people use the baseball fields. By the time we got there, all the fields were taken by groups of dogs. One field was reserved by the Greyhound rescue. They invited the fellow sight hounds in to play.After proper introductions, the races began!

All the Ridgebacks enjoyed the day and now resting quietly on the bed!

Lately I have been alerted to some new families who are hopefully joining our little blog. Seems New Orleans is a hot spot for Ridgebacks. A few rescues have found their forever home in the Big Easy.

So it looks like New Orleans will be the site of our next playdate. No details at the moment but it will have to wait until it warms up a bit. Suggestions as to site, date, and time are welcome.

Tears Tonight

Mourning the loss of one of my former foster dogs- Dee. She was a special girl who made an impression on everyone she met. She was adopted about a year ago to a wonderful couple. They gave her the best year of her life. RIP Deeter Peters- know that you were loved by all who had a part in your rescue journey.

I was thumbing through a catalog today, when a very handsome, male model caught my eye. What a hunk!

Er, did I mention it was a pet catalog? KV Pet's new fall catalog to be exact, and there on page 109 was an eye- catching Ridgeback head.

Hey, that dog looks like Guy...... hey, that IS Guy!

I'd forgotten I'd entered some photos in KV Vet's photo contest. Turns out Guy was one of the three finalists for "cover dog". Beaten by a cute puppy though... what'cha gonna do??

I'm happy ..... it was a great surprize.

This Weekend in FL

We just got back from the Sunshine State Rhodesian Ridgeback Club's Fall Fun Day. The gulf coast was well represented- Belinda and I went down with our Ridgebacks. A friend from NC came down with three more Ridgies. Also Tabitha and her daughter, Christina, joined us. They came w/ their Mastiff, Batista. We all enjoyed the dog show on Saturday morning and then the Fall Fun Day that afternoon.

Boy was it hot! They had lunch and then some demonstrations of Rally and Agility. You could test your dog for the Canine Good Citizen certification too. I waited too late to get Logan tested as it was time to try his paws at lure coursing. He did an amazing job, looked like he was enjoying himself. I did not get any pictures of him running but here are some of the pups after we got back to the hotel room.

And the highlight of the weekend- Batista celebrated his birthday by showing the sighthounds they aren't the only ones who can lure course!

We had a great time and look forward to going back next year.

Roads of Hope

There's a website for a group of people dedicated to rescuing animals all across the country. I have done a few transports for this group. Generally, it is well organized and successful.

A few weeks ago Belinda and I helped transport Waffles. We were told she was a RR mix puppy. She went all the way from a kill shelter in LA to her forever home in Miami. She spent the night here on the Gulf Coast before continuing on her journey.

Excited new parents of Freckles!

My name is Courtney - But I have been called Kat since I was a child because I had a green and brown eye growing up - (Although the green one has turned mostly brown in my older years!) I have two wonderful little girls names Kaylee (5) and Malina (4) and the kindest husband in the world named Mathis.

Today we were blessed with a new addition to our family thanks to the help of Amanda and Bonita. Her name is Freckles. She was being fostered by Bonita until she was kind enough to let us take her into our home to become the newest addition to our family!

She is part Beagle and part Rhodesian Ridgeback. We have had her less then a day and she is already melting our hearts. We were lucky to be blessed with her and hope that we can meet up for fun with others in the area.

We also own 2 Shih Zus that are learning that a big dog is just as fun and the small fuzzy ones! We only have the picture that was given to us by Bonita so far but more will come. Hope to meet you all soon and thank you so much for the invite into your group!

Newest Member of our Little Club

Busy weekend and it was only Friday night. After work, a couple of friends and I headed to FL to pick up a rescued Ridgeback who had found himself in a kill shelter.

This poor dog had been on the rescue radar for months but always managed to slip through their fingers. Finally he was saved from the shelter by a wonderful family in FL who adore their own Ridgies and have a heart for rescue. Not enough thanks can be said for their quick action and BIG hearts.

He is now safe and sound in a home which was originally his temporary home until rescue could arrange transport. But after speaking w/ her this morning it sounds like her Ridgeback and cats have laid claim to him. Hopefully he is finally FOREVER home.

Welcome Home J.D. and Morgan who was recently adopted from rescue as well.

2 more RRs here on the Gulf Coast- when's the welcome home party and play date?

Weekend in Memphis

Last weekend, I traveled to Memphis with my boys. We went to see one my former foster dogs, Tamu. We spent the weekend with her new family. Roadie, Logan, Tamu, and Sheba had a good time together.Pictured Above: Tamu, former foster dog, Roadie and Logan

As part of our weekend, another RR was adopted to a wonderful home here on the Gulf Coast. The family has been invited to join our group.

But that's ok. Roadie checking out TaylorSue's credentials. TJ in line behind Roadie. Had a great playdate with Amanda, Roadie and Logan. Any pseudo-aggression by TJ toward big dogs was totally not evident (we'd had a previous bad experience that was caused by a not good 'group lesson'). Taylor was the only one to raise her hackles at first meeting, but then again, she's the only one that has hackles. All four had a wonderful time and showed excellent manners. What a great opportunity for our dogs to learn a little about being members of a larger pack and acting appropriately. Thanks, Amanda

Project Safe Pets for the Upper Gulf Coast

Have you ever lost one of your pets? If you have, you know it's the worst feeling in the world. Are they injured? Are they roaming in unfamiliar territory, trying to find their way home? Are they terrified? As terrified as you are, worrying about them?

What about the other side of the coin. Have you ever found a dog or cat, well-cared for, loving...a pet you know has a home somewhere...but where? It's a helpless feeling.

When we've lost a member of our family - or found someone else's - we will do everything possible to make sure they're returned to the home they love.

Thanks to WALA FOX 10 and WPPG The Gulf Coast CW, we now have another tool to help us make that happen. Project Safe Pets was launched on April 1st of this year at Fox10. This page shows pertinent information regarding lost and/or found pets at no charge and is available to the public and all local rescue shelters who currently house animals waiting for adoption.

Project Safe Pets will allow families searching for their lost pets to see if they've been located somewhere along the Gulf Coast. It will help finders of lost dogs and cats reunite them with their owners. And just as importantly, local shelters will be able to upload information weekly on pets available for adoption. Seven million dogs and cats enter shelters each year across the United States and a large number of these animals are there simply because they couldn't find their way home.

This site serves as a public service to our communitity and contains useful information about the importance of spaying and neutering your pets. The fewer unwanted dogs and cats, the fewer end up on the streets, over-running our shelters, burdening our neighborhoods, and placing hardships - both financial and emotional - on our area.

Arlis, the author, was looking for topics about evaluating litters and came across a page on my website on just that topic. She also got a kick out of my blogs - (Don't I LOVE that!) and found the photo of the last litter that's featured in the article. It's one of the little darlings right after I discovered they'd made confetti out of their puppy pen. I'd spent about an hour redoing it and making it all neat and tidy and it took them about 10 minutes to trash it. Oh, but they'd had a wonderful time! The stinkers.

Exciting News

HE DID IT! My beloved Roadie has been accepted a Therapy dog. This has been my dream for Roadie since he came to live with us back in 2007. He has such a HUGE heart and it would be a shame not to share it with everyone.

I love my LOVERNOSE! Can't wait to start visiting- an assisted living facility has already requested Roadie as soon as he was "official."

Happy Birthday

Today is my lover-nose Roadie's birthday- he turned 5 years old. It seems he has settled down and matured a lot over the past year. He is still a bit pushy. Roadie is an incredible dog who just melts my heart.
I had planned on making a special dog treat for him to share with Logan and his cousin, Harley, who is spending the weekend with us But Roadie went surfing and snagged a 1/2 loaf of bread. I thought I had it high enough but I guess not :))

How is everyone? What is everyone up to? Any news?

I submitted Roadie's application to Therapy Dogs International. We will have to wait to see if he is approved. He passed the test with flying colors so we are hopeful. Logan is driving us all crazy with his puppy antics- we all run out of steam long before he does. He will be taking his Canine Good Citizen exam. I'll have to make sure he is completely worn out so he will pass the test.

Sandra- sorry I ended up having to work this weekend and could not get over to the agility performance. How did it go?

Belinda- Didn't your youngster complete something special?

Beach Park

The beach play date was awesome. There was a total of 10 Ridgebacks that represented 4 different states. I hope everyone had a great time.

Logan, Roadie, Harley, Rock, Brodie, Champ, Sadie, Hudson, Murphy, and Coleman took the beach by storm. They all got along- instantly. It was the livernoses (there were 3) who gave everyone a barking play-by-play.

My two boys had a blast. They were so tired when we got home. Like they always say- a tired dog is a good one!

I can't wait to do it again. It appears that Memorial Day weekend may be the next official playdate. I have a former foster Ridgeback and her family coming to FL for vacation. They have caught wind of our play dates and are heading down here from the Midwest for some coastal sun and fun. As the date approaches, there will be more details.

Hopefully you can view it and if not, please consider writing your state legislators to ask that they approve a three year interval for the rabies vaccine. You can google Alabama Rabies Vaccine law and several sites have committee members or Google Alabama state senators and put in your zip code to get your representative.

Dear Senator Pittman,

We recently returned to Fairhope, AL and are delighted to be back in the south with the one exception of putting our beloved pets (two dogs) health at risk because of the requirement for an annual rabies vaccine. We lost one dog (a wonderful therapy dog loved by many patients and others) due to a possible adverse immune response.

Folks in the west think we were crazy to wish to return to the south. Little do they know the beauty, the gracious living, the wonderfully independent attitude and basically a saner, kinder way of life. However, this is one area where I believe Alabama is behind the times and for the first time in my life I may violate the law. This is very uncomfortable for me and also I will not be able to use my pets as therapy dogs as they will clearly have to be isolated from exposure to other dogs or folks in medical facilities that welcome therapy animals.

This is such a catch 22 situation. Would if not be possible to require a titer (a measure of the level of rabies immunity) for year two and three, rather than the dangerous mandatory vaccine? Or better, join the other 49 states in having a three year interval for the rabies vaccine.

Thank you for any attention you might give to my concerns.

No Rabies Vaccines Annually!

Forgive the length of this post, but in light of the last post, I thought posters should read this UK Dog World article:

We, the undersigned, would like to bring to your attention our concerns in the light of recent new evidence regarding vaccination protocol.The American Veterinary Medical Association Committee report this year states that 'the one year revaccination recommendation frequently found on many vaccination labels is based on historical precedent, not scientific data'.

In JAVMA in 1995, Smith notes that 'there is evidence that some vaccines provide immunity beyond one year.In fact, according to research there is no proof that many of the yearly vaccinations are necessary and that protection in many instances may be life long'; also, 'Vaccination is a potent medical procedure with both benefits and risks for the patient'; further that, 'Revaccination of patients with sufficient immunity does not add measurably to their disease resistance, and may increase their risk of adverse post-vaccination events.'

Finally, he states that:'Adverse events may be associated with the antigen, adjuvant, carrier, preservative or combination thereof. Possible adverse events include failure to immunise, anaphylaxis, immunosuppression, autoimmune disorders, transient infections and/or long-term infected carrier states.'

The report of the American Animal Hospital Association Canine Vaccine Taskforce in JAAHA (39 March/April 2003) is also interesting reading:

'Current knowledge supports the statement that no vaccine is always safe, no vaccine is always protective and no vaccine is always indicated';

'Misunderstanding, misinformation and the conservative nature of our profession have largely slowed adoption of protocols advocating decreased frequency of vaccination';

'Immunological memory provides durations of immunity for core infectious diseases that far exceed the traditional recommendations for annual vaccination.This is supported by a growing body of veterinary information as well as well-developed epidemiological vigilance in human medicine that indicates immunity induced by vaccination is extremely long lasting and, in .most cases, lifelong.'

Further, the evidence shows that the duration of immunity for rabies vaccine, canine distemper vaccine, canine parvovirus vaccine, feline panleukopaenia vaccine, feline rhinotracheitis and feline calicivurus have all been demonstrated to be a minimum of seven years, by serology for rabies and challenge studies for all others.

The veterinary surgeons below fully accept that no single achievement has had greater impact on the lives and well-being of our patients, our clients and our ability to prevent infectious diseases than the developments in annual vaccines.We, however, fully support the recommendations and guidelines of the American Animal Hospitals Association Taskforce, to reduce vaccine protocols for dogs and cats such that booster vaccinations are only given every three years, and only for core vaccines unless otherwise scientifically justified.

We further suggest that the evidence currently available will soon lead to the following facts being accepted: The immune systems of dogs and cats mature fully at six months and any modified live virus (MLV) vaccine given after that age produces immunity that is good for the life of that pet.

If another MLV vaccine is given a year later, the antibodies from the first vaccine neutralise the antigens from the subsequent so there is little or no effect; the pet is not 'boosted', nor are more memory cells induced.Not only are annual boosters for canine parvovirus and distemper unnecessary, they subject the pet to potential risks of allergic reactions and immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia.There is no scientific documentation to back up label claims for annual administration of MLV vaccines.

Puppies and kittens receive antibodies through their mothers' milk.This natural protection can last eight to 14 weeks.Puppies and kittens should NOT be vaccinated at less than eight weeks. Maternal immunity will neutralise the vaccine and little protection will be produced.

Vaccination at six weeks will, however, DELAY the timing of the first effective vaccine. Vaccines given two weeks apart SUPPRESS rather than stimulate the immune system.This would give possible new guidelines as follows:

A series of vaccinations is given starting at eight weeks of age (or preferably later) and given three to four weeks apart, up to 16 weeks of age.One further booster is given sometime after six months of age and will then provide life-long immunity.

In light of data now available showing the needless use and potential harm of annual vaccination, we call on our profession to cease the policy of annual vaccination.

Can we wonder that clients are losing faith in vaccination and researching the issue themselves?We think they are right to do so.Politics, tradition or the economic well-being of veterinary surgeons and pharmaceutical companies should not be a factor in making medical decisions.

It is accepted that the annual examination of a pet is advisable.We undervalue ourselves, however, if we hang this essential service on the back of vaccination and will ultimately suffer the consequences.Do we need to wait until we see actions against vets, such as those launched in the state of Texas by Dr Robert Rogers? He asserts that the present practice of marketing vaccinations for companion animals constitutes fraud by misrepresentation, fraud by silence and theft by deception.

The oath we take as newly-qualified veterinary surgeons is 'to help, or at least do no harm'.We wish to maintain our position within society, and be deserving of the trust placed in us as a profession. It is therefore our contention that those who continue to give annual vaccinations in the light of new evidence may well be acting contrary to the welfare of the animals committed to their care.

Rabies Vaccine Annually?????

Just went to a super vet - graduated top of class a while back. She insists annual vaccine is a must. A new case of rabid raccoon chased by dogs and caught - one dog current on rabies so nothing needed, other dog not current must spend six months (that's right - months) in vet clinic for observation. I am so ticked, but she feels it is for the protection of the dog and rabies is currently bad (5 cases in Baldwin County, I believe currently). She feels it is the stuff the vaccine is mixed with that causes problems. TJ was last vaccinated with a 3 yr vaccine this past May so in order to go to the dog park for Memorial Day weekend get together I am forced to vaccinate him. Would love to hear other opinions. She does not think the new attempt for a three year will pass. Anyone up to date on this. Thanks ps: if we were not going to be with other dogs I would hold off until the legislation passes or fails and I may opt to do just that.

Great idea for a blog, Amanda!

I'm Sandra and I have 2 RRs in agility, Darla and Guy. Darla has her Novice Jumpers with Weaves title and needs one more leg to complete her Novice Standard title. Guy is just starting out, shows flashes of brilliance, but is just so happy go lucky, it's hard for him to pass up visiting bar setters and the judge without saying hello.

Here's Guy in Novice Jumpers Preferred at the Mobile Bay Dog Training Club's March trial. No Q's, but had a great time. Trials are always good to find out what else you need to train for!

On April 25, there will be an "A" agility match in Pensacola. Check the Five Flags site for directions.

Most of the events are held in Central & South FL but if we could increase the membership in NWFL maybe we could bring some of the fun up here! Ridgeback Playdate on the Beach

Hello Everyone,

On Saturday, April 18th, around 2 PM, some of us are getting together at a local dog park. I have invited friends from MS and NC to visit as well. There will be quite a few Ridgebacks in attendance.

The dog park is in the East Hill area of Pensacola, FL, in a park called Bayview Park.

If you type bayview park, pensacola, fl 32503 into Google Maps,
it will give the general location, but the dog park on the water
is down by Lloyd and 20th, not up on Mallory. If you take Blount
from 17th you can not miss it.

Please feel free to pass this information onto other Ridgeback owners in this area who may not YET be a member of this blog.

Super Idea for a RR blog - who else could understand

Hi fellow RR friends,

I don't think anyone who has not had the pleasure of having a Ridgey share your home can understand the uniqueness of this breed so will be fun to share experiences. Our 1.5 RRs (Taylorsue is obviously a mix and TJ is an RRR (Rhodesian Ridgeback Runt) got invited in to a State Farm office this am. Although usually rambunctious Tj really put on a show of being the perfect representative of his breed. I swear he was showing off. Taylor also rose to the occasion. So we have another offer of babysitting from the insurance agent. These guys always amaze. They just do not have any set way of behaving - it's more a whatever they feel like sort of thing.

They are settling into their new temporary home and after so many changes in the last few months I am very proud of them. I hope they are soon rewarded with a permanent home with a good backyard. This villa is on a golf course and no fences allowed but it is fine for now while we look around.
